This is version 2K8B of the Suska IP core. ------------------------------------------ Important notes: We will release compatible hardware for this core and require some feedback. There are two hardware versions. The Suska-III-C (C stands for 'Clasic') board and the Suska-III-T (T stands for 'Tiny) board. Please have a look on www.experiment-s.de for further information. Introduction: This core is an Atari compatible core for the different ST machines. It includes all custom chips like GLUE, MMU (MCU), SHIFTER, DMA, BLITTER and SHADOW (Stacy, STBook) as also cores for the LSI chips originally used in these machines like the 68000 CPU (68K00), the multi function port MFP, the WD1772 floppy controller and the Yamaha sound chip YM2149. There are several add ons like SD card interface, IDE interface, real time clock, sound with a CODEC, SCSI/ ACSI bridge and a Bootloader prepared for the Suska-III-C hardware for loading the operation system to the flash memory. There are also some hardware extensions on the Suska-III-C like USB and Ethernet. Distribution: With this release the file structure of the distribution has changed in the following way: - All required source code to build the machine is available. - We provide support for the Suska-III-C hardware platform in the Altera section. - We do not provide implementation support for other hardware platforms like Actel, Lattice or Xilinx. - There is some top level file support for the Xilinx platform in the rtl/vhdl/suska directory. Compiler notes: The core is compiled (and tested) with following integrated development environments: Altera: Quartus II version 7.2, Quartus II version 8.0 and Quartus II version 8.1. Xilinx: ISE 10.1. Although this release is prepared for Xilinx it is not tested on Xilinx hardware. Progress: The core is tested successfully on the Suska-III-C prototype boards. The Emutos Desktop, TOS 1.00, TOS 1.02, TOS 1.62 and TOS 2.06 are working fine. TOS 1.02 fails to boot. There are several issues with emutos concerning drive access which seems not to be caused by this core. For more information see the known issues and the changelog in the documentation directory. Hardware requirements: The hardware requirements depend on the implemented logic. The complete core requires on Altera Cyclone III devices about 20.000 logic elements. This corresponds to a medium size device. To feature all interfaces, about 320 user I/O are required. There will be a hardware platform Suska-III-C available in Spring 2009 which is developed around this core and therefore optimally fits hosting the core. For further information see www.experiment-s.de. What's ahead: Enhancements to the 68K00 to meet the 68020 funtionality or up. Operate SCSI devices on the ACSI DMA channel. Operate SD-Cards on the ACSI DMA channel. Provide the USB host interface. Provide the Ethernet interface. Prepare the MINT operating system on Suska-III-C. Enhance the video capabilities to get the colour resolutions working on modern TFTs. Enhance the video capabilities providing higher resolutions meeting the requirements for the MINT operating system. Add a memory management unit to the core to ease the use of operating systems like Linux. Bug reports and further releases: Please help to improve this core by reporting ideas and bugs to wf@inventronik.de. We will release the next version 2K9A on June 24th 2009. We will decide on the incoming response, which features will be released with the next version. Philosophy concerning the Suska hardware: As mentioned, the availability of the Suska-III-C hardware is planed in 2009. First we will release a very small series of 10 to 20 units which will be signed 'CollectionSeries' in the bottom copper plane. This makes this first series very unique. After this we plan to produce bigger charges available about 3 month later. The boards will be available from the Inventronik GmbH. 20081224 Enjoy Wolfgang Foerster
